“We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”

June 17 & 18: Lazy, rainy days in Copenhagen [photo journal]

By 04:24 , ,

My first two days in Copenhagen were time to relax.  I was slow to get up in the morning, quick to go back to sleep.  The rain pounding on the windows of our apartment didn't give me any incentive to conquer my exhaustion and head into the world outside.  Instead, it spurred me on to watch another episode of Game of Thrones.
When I finally did go outside, much of the time was spent indoors, visiting art galleries and making things out of Lego (Nicholas and I decided to build each other).  We stopped at the King's Garden to view Rosenborg Castle, visit the iconic Little Mermaid and visit the preserved Kastellet Fortress.

One of the best preserved star fortresses in Europe, Kastellet is open to the public daily.  We were surrounded by tourists snapping pictures, locals walking dogs, and plenty of joggers in compression socks.  Armed guards patrol the site, mostly telling unsuspecting, non-Danish speaking visitors to keep off the grass.

Apparently visitors are often 'underwhelmed' by the size of The Little Mermaid, who sits waiting to view her prince from sunrise to sundown, despite her being a lifesize bronze sculpture.  The sculptor wanted a famous ballerina to pose for the it, but as she would not appear naked, he coerced his wife to model for the body.
