Summer solstice | The twinkling Tivoli [photo journal]
A series of photographs and some text from our evening explore the warmly lit wonderland; the Tivoli.
Camera in hand, I followed Nicholas and
Uffe – our host – through the fairy-lit gardens of the Tivoli.
“You could call this ‘hygge’,” said Uffe.
“What’s hygge?” Nicholas asked.
“It’s like…” Uffe paused to find the words,
“… cosy. It’s when there are fairy
lights and candles, maybe rain outside, and you sit inside and have Glögg. Like Christmas. When there are friends, and light and
warmth.”
Uffe left us to explore on our own while he
head home for bed. He showed us where to
go for the laser show, and pointed us in the direction of some cafes and sweet
shops and rides.
One of the oldest amusement parks in the
world, the Tivoli has enchanted magic-makers for years – from Walt Disney to
Hans Christian Andersen. There are
sections for carnival rides, as well as restaurants, a hotel and a stage for
performers. Uffe said that Elton John
was to play there in the coming weeks.
We wandered and wandered, holding hands and
getting caught up in the lights and the glitz and the smell of toffee
popcorn. Just before 11pm, there was a
laser show at the central lake.
A mixture of smoke, fire, colourful lasers
and water fountains, the show felt more like a dance of light than any laser
show I’d seen before. The music, the
shapes and colours reminded me of going to the ballet with my mother, of being
enthralled by movement and sound.
“Here’s where the X-Wings come in,” Nick
said, as violent strikes send shadows across the water and pyrotechnics erupted
from the lake.
The sky was almost black now – the end of
the longest day of the year – and we filed out of the small magic land and back
into the urban, sprawling streets of Copenhagen, giggling and chatting all the
way back to our Frederiksberg apartment.
